A Trip Down Memory Lane or: DJ Set, Part 2: Mixes (The Redux)

Well looking through all my Mediafire files, I came upon some things that I deleted from the blog, but are still active. About month and  half ago or so I was contacted by Blogger about violating copyright. They threatened to shut down the blog unless I removed some posts. The complaint was filed by Stones Throw Records. For those that don't listen to hip-hop, ST is one of the biggest underground labels around, releasing now classic albums all the time. They have an all-star roster that includes Madlib, Oh No, Percee P, MF DOOM and the late-great J Dilla among others. They are also known for heavily protecting their releases and attacking blogs. In my haste to remove their material, I removed some things they could give two shits about. So here they are.

I will say that hip-hop is probably my first love in music, more so than noise. Hip-hop permeates my work in noise and influences just about everything I do musically. So enjoy these, these are a bunch of DJ mixes thrown together by a bunch of the best people in the business. Also included is two releases that got lost in the shuffle.

Enjoy.

Nymphomatriarch

Nymphomatriarch is a one-off group collab between Aaron Funk, Venetian Snares, and Rachael Kozak, most known as Hecate. Aaron and Rachael were at one time an item, and while on tour together in early 2001, they decided, after getting rather high and drunk, to record themselves having sex. In the following months, this album was spawned, having all sounds synthesized from the recorded "sessions". Enjoy.

Noizeclot

Noizeclot was an industrial threesome from the 80s that released 3 cassettes on Inner-X-Musick. The group called their music organized distortion, using no musical instruments. One tape went as far as to use only the human voice and delay from a Roland 1000. Minimal, haunting and dark.

Opium

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I've been busy with music projects and trying to find a job. Today I will be introducing you all to my favorite musical group. This band was the first thing I really fell in love with.

KMFDM began as a musical art project in February of 1984 between Sascha Konietzko and Udo Sturm. KMFDM has been going strong ever since with Sascha as the brains and backbone of the group. The group has released 15+ albums and EPs and became a staple of the famous and now defunct Chicago label Wax Trax! Records. This is KMFDM's earliest outing featuring Sascha, famous British musician Raymond Watts and an unknown third personal credited as Ton Geist. This release is probably my favorite of theirs, industrial rock at its best, the noisiest they have ever been. Enjoy.

3. The Smell
4. Helmut! Mein Helmut
5. Warp'd

Oh and also, I've been thinking about adding some team members to the blog to help distribute the load and add some diversity to the sounds, so if anyone is interested drop a line in the comments. Please include a little snippet of your musical taste.

Cage

Something I just got done finishing up that I think you guys might enjoy. Improv set that's heavy on the bass and the high ends. It's pretty minimal in execution, but i think the end result is rather dense. Something a little different than I am used to. Let me know what you guys think.

Area DJ

And now for something completely different, again. I picked these two 7s up earlier in the year for a dollar a piece. They looked promising and were cheap as hell. Both of these singles were put out by the now defunct pseudo-label Area DJ. The famous music club The Metro in Chicago also houses a dance club/bar called Smartbar. From 2002 to 2005, Smartbar and The Onion newspaper would host events at the Smartbar showcasing local Chicago talent. These 7"s along with a couple 12s were given out as promo/sampler material for the artists playing. Many of these artists are now well known throughout the house seen. Enjoy these two.

Pate

Here is something a little different than normal. I picked this seven inch up a couple months ago because the packaging intrigued me. I have absolutely no information about this artist, record or even the record label. The label site seems to be down. The B-side is a remix of a song so I assume this artist has a album or other single I just can't find anything. If anyone has anything, please help my curiosity. Anyway, the record is a nice downtempo ride in the vein of Four Tet or Zero 7. So give it a try.

Lowest Music 2

A request by PM. This is some very early Merzbow. Originally released on his own label ZSF and then reissued on Extreme. Sound collage and loops very similar to his release of Nil Vagina Tape Loops in the Merzbox. Trust me though, they're different. Old-school. Enjoy.

Space Masonna

Masonna is probably best known for his crushing vocal noise and insane live shows, however there is another side to the man. Just as with Merzbow, Masonna is heavily influenced by psychedelic music and in fact started a psych project Christine 23 Onna. The group features Masonna on synths and Toda Fusao on guitar. They have released 3 albums since 1996, unfortunately I only have two, if someone has the first please up. Also here is a single track from one of Masonna's newer projects. Space Machine is a solo endeavor started in 2000 as an "analog electronic cosmic sound project." In homage to 50s & 60s electronic music, sixties U.S. and British psych and 70s krautrock, Masonna began collecting vintage electronic equipment and recording. Enjoy the taste.

Hanatarash is one of the earlier bands fronted by Yamatsuka Eye, who is now probably most famous for founding Boredoms. Ichichila

Awhile ago before I took a bit of a break from the blog, I said I was thinking about posting some world music, so here it is. I can't express how much I love this album. I play it constantly. Download it and enjoy, you won't be disappointed.

"Since its release in 2000, Ichichila has quietly assumed the status of a 'desert blues' classic. Tartit are a group of musicians from the Timbuktu area of Mali, which explains the similarity of this music to that of their better known neighbor Ali Farka Toure. He draws heavily on Songhai and Tuareg traditions, while Tartit are Tuareg tribes people whose nomadic lifestyle seems to have prepared them well the for the international tours they now find themselves undertaking. Onstage they are a picture of grace and dignity with the men’s faces veiled and the women's proudly exposed--a unique reversal of the usual dress codes found in many Islamic cultures. Their songs are based on timeless hypnotic grooves created with only the sparsest arrangements. Unlike that other well known Tuareg group Tinariwen, the music of Tartit is largely "unplugged! ". They sometimes use a single electric guitar, but more often their cyclical melodic motifs come from the scrabbling notes of the Tuareg lute (tehardent) or fiddle (imzad). Rhythm is supplied by the softly booming tindé drum and insistent hand claps, over which call and response vocals, (usually led by the women) ululations and sudden screams pile on the atmosphere. This is music to sway rather than dance to; they play most of it sitting down in a semi-circle and you might just want to lie down and chill for much of it. Eminently recommendable. --Jon Lusk-amazon--

“Splendid!”–Robert Plant, upon seeing Tartit at the Festival in the Desert, Mali, January 2003

Tartit: Arahmat Walit M. Attaher (vocals, imzad, tinde); Fadimata Walett Oumar, Mama Walet Amoumine, Fatimata W. Mohamedun (vocals, tinde); Fatoumata Haidara (background vocals).

Additional personnel includes: Mohamed Issa Ag Oumar (vocals, electric guitar); Amanou Issa (vocals, tehardent); Ag Mohamed Idwal (vocals).

Recorded at Centre Culturel Francais, Bamako, Mali.

4 Adaptations of Rossz Csillag Alatt Született

Venetian Snares, Aaron Funk, is the premier breakcore artist of today. Stationed out of Winnipeg, Canada, Snares has been releasing music as earlier as 1992 and had his label debut with the Greg Hates Car Culture EP. Snares signature style is harsh and aggressive, often bordering on noise. Although this is the case he has dabbled in many other genres as well. He has released future-jazz records and covered two Black Sabbath tracks in dub style. During a trip to Hungary, Funk became enamored with Hungarian classical music and has so far released two albums, dedicated to this new found love. The album I present today to introduce Funk is an remix EP of his first such album Rossz Csillag Alatt Született. Expect more to come from this man.
